かまぼこ【蒲鉾】
(1)タイ・ハモ・サメ・エソなど白身の魚肉をすりつぶして味をつけ， 練りあげたあと長方形の小板に半月形に塗ったり， 簀(ス)巻きにしたりして蒸し上げた食品。 昔は， 竹に筒形に長く塗った形が蒲(ガマ)の穂に似ていたのでこの名があるが， 現在ではこの作り方のものを竹輪(チクワ)， 板につけたものを板つき蒲鉾という。
(2)宝石をはめ込まない中高の指輪。
(3)蒲の穂。 鉾の形に似るところからいう。 ［本草綱目啓蒙］
